Your Planet, Your News
The Eastside Daily Planet News is a perpetually busy place as people browse its thousand-some books, newspapers and magazines.
It’s easily the best bet whether you're in the mood for reading to relax, learning something new, or staying on top of current affairs. Publications from around the country and around town—as well as special interest fare for bakers, programmers, knitters, writers and sports enthusiasts—fill the shelves. The Planet has something for everyone.
Daily Planet owner, Matthew Collard, said he wouldn't dream of doing anything else. "I always wanted to be a business owner that could be a part of a community. My business, right in the center of the mall, was already somewhat of a landmark when I bought it 11 years ago. I love it here." Matt’s day starts at 8 AM when he opens his store to a cheerful bunch of retired women who meet every day in the seating area next to his store. Shortly after, a group of retired Boeing guys stop by the Planet for their morning papers. The next thing you know, the day has rolled into one engaging visitor after another.
Matt said he feels blessed to enjoy his work. “I'm not isolated in a cubicle somewhere. I have people that I interact with and we are all there for each other." Matt is also a licensed minister who has officiated at the weddings of Crossroads friends.
Matt’s wish is to increase his collection. He encourages his customers to tell him what they want. "Almost everyday someone asks me about a magazine I haven't even heard of. The other day, someone asked for the 'Shoehorn' magazine. I had no idea it even existed!” The Daily Planet collection even includes German publications for the large German community in the area. “Crossroads has changed so much in the last decade, but the sense of community we all feel here is as strong as ever."
